Niilo Junnikkala

Niilo Junnikkala (b. 1995) started his piano studies at the age of eight and composition only a year later. He has studied composition with Igor Rogaljov. In 2014 Junnikkala graduated from Lahti Conservatory where he studied piano with Peter Lönnqvist, and started piano studies in the bachelor program at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. At the Academy Junnikkala´s teachers are Teppo Koivisto and Risto-Matti Marin.

Niilo Junnikkala has participated in several competitions in Finland, Sweden and Russia. In 2011 he won the first place in the International S. I. Savshinsky piano competition in St. Petersburg and in 2012 the first place in the composition competition of the City of Tchaikovsky. As a pianist, he has participated in numerous masterclasses and worked with such teachers as Eero Heinonen, Olli Mustonen, Konstantin Bogino, Roland Krueger and Robert Levin. In summer 2015 Junnikkala was participant of the prestigious International Holland Music Sessions where he studied with prof. Boris Berman.

Junnikkala´s compositional activity stretches for over a decade, and his works have been regularly performed in ”From Avantgarde to the Present Day” -festival in St. Petersburg. He has written chamber music for various ensembles, several song cycles and works for solo piano. The two sonatas have been written during the spring and summer 2015 and they are Junnikkala´s first large-scale compositions for solo piano. Sonatas do not have any programmatic content, but the second one has been partially inspired by a visit to Jean Sibelius´s home Ainola in June 2015. Stylistically the two sonatas derive from practically all eras of western music history.
